The Basics of UV® Coatings

UV curable coatings are single component products that cure instantly when exposed to high intensity ultraviolet light.  Unlike conventional floor coatings, the UV versions do not begin to harden upon mixing or application.  This provides maximum application flexibility of the UV curable finishes.

Curing is required to create the permanent bonds that give this product its unique properties.   Curing is accomplished with a mobile UV light source which can move at a rate of 30-60 ft/min (.77 to 1.54 meter/min) and have a cure path up to 30 inches (77 cm) wide. There are several equipment manufacturers that we can recommend to provide that part of the process.

The amazing part is that the coating is fully cured once it has been exposed to the UV light and can thus be used immediately.  Because the bonds of the molecules do not fall apart like conventional finishes the maintenance is reduced by as much as sixty percent!

Two versions of UV coatings are available:
Water Based and 100% Solids

The water based versions have lower solids content but are easier to apply.  Many versions will form a dry film after the water content has evaporated and prior to the UV curing step. The benefit to this method is that it is easier to apply and still has the benefits of the permanent bonds for a long lasting finish. The spread rate for the water based finishes is comparable to a water based wood floor finish.  Two coats of our products will leave a film of 1.6 mils.  This is in comparison to six coats of metal interlocked VCT finish.

The 100% solids versions do not contain any solvent so are more viscous.  They are cured at a thicker depth and cure instantly for immediate use.  An average applied film thickness for a 100% solids UV coating is 2 mils (50.4 microns).  This gives a deeper looking and very durable coating in comparison to conventional finishes.

These products are not just limited to one or two types of coatings.  Epoxies, vinyl, urethanes and others can be used for different surfaces depending on the needs! UV coatings can be thought of as “concentrated” chemistries compared to their conventional analogs.  This results in superior performance properties which can be realized at considerably lower coating thicknesses.

The cost /benefit of these products are tremendous.  The application cost is competitive to traditional finishes, dry time is less and there is no dry time with the 100% solids finish.  But, the real benefit is that these finishes do not fall apart over time.  They are UV stable on VCT and wood.  They do not yellow or turn white after time.  They require much less maintenance.  They require no buffing or recoats for up to a year depending on the traffic. Overall, your customer can save as much as 50% on their total floor maintenance program.

Two Aliphatic Polyurethane formulations

utilizing both a UV Cure and a Hybrid Air Dry Cure

Application Instructions:

First Recoat from a strippable coating for Tile, VCT, or Terrazzo

If you have a strippable coating on your existing floor remove metal interlocked finish using conventional method. Make sure that all of the old finish is off the floor.  We recommend using a Brown Pad with the last application of stripper to get any impregnated finish off the tile.

  • Apply Smart Finish Hybrid or Flash Finish UV using our special Tee Bar Cover to get an even application.
  • Apply a second coat after the first has dried.
  • Run a Brown Pad over the second coat to even any high spots.
  • Apply 2 more coats, letting each coat dry.

If using Smart Finish Hybrid, let air cure for an additional 24 hours before use.

If using Flash Finish UV, pass over the finish with the UV Curing Machine to make the floor usable immediately.

Recoating either Smart Finish Hybrid or Flash Finish UV

  • Abrade the floor with the In-Between Coat Pad.
  • Clean the floor completely and apply 2 thin coats of finish to desired appearance.

If using Smart Finish Hybrid allow to dry for 24 hours.

If using Flash Finish UV pass over with UV Curing Machine and the floor is ready for use immediately!

Wood Flooring (Sanding)

  • Sand and smooth making sure to remove all old finish.
  • Vacuum and tack until all dust is gone.
  • Coat the floor with Smart Finish Hybrid or Flash Finish UV using our special Tee Bar Cover.
  • Let dry and apply a second coat.If using Smart Finish Hybrid, abrade with a Brown Pad, apply 2 more coats and let post cure for 24 hours.
  • If using Flash Finish UV, abrade with a Brown Pad and apply 2 more coats, letting each coat dry.

Each coat dries faster than the previous so the final coats will only need a short period.  Be careful to get up all puddles (the UV light will not cure them if they are wet).

Then cure with the UV Floor Machine.  Use the UV Hand Held unit for stairs and hard to get areas. Floor is ready for use immediately.  Furniture and move in is allowed at this time.

Recoating Wood

Abrade the floor with a sanding screen according to wear.  Make sure that all peeling and swirl marks are gone.  We recommend using a Brown Pad to eliminate swirl marks.  Apply two coats of finish with our special Tee Bar Cover with a light weight tee bar and then cure with UV Machine.

Concrete

Flash Finish UV is recommended here because these are more likely to be commercial and industrial applications where a fast return to service is important.

  • Prepare the floor using a cleaner degreaser.
  • Rinse the floor and make sure the surface is clean and dry before application of finish.
  • If smooth appearance is critical apply 2 coats, use brown pad and then apply 1 or 2 more coats for desired appearance.
  • Where a smooth appearance is less critical, apply three coats of Flash Finish UV and then cure with UV Floor Machine.

When recoating concrete floors that have an existing pigmented epoxy coating on them, we recommend applying a fresh coat of our F6800 Series Water Based Epoxy Floor Coatings prior to application of Flash Finish UV Clear Coating.  The F6800 Epoxies can be applied to a still damp floor without creating adhesion problems and permit application of Flash Finish UV in approximately 6 hours.

Clean Up

Both the Smart Finish Hybrid and the Flash Finish UV are water based.  All equipment and Tee Bar Covers are reusable as long as the finish is removed before it gets hard. Clean with a dilute soap solution and flush with warm water.

Daily Maintenance:

These finishes are hard.  The cleaner you keep the floors, the longer they will last.  We recommend using our Pro Guard UV Daily Cleaner.   Clean using either a mop or soft bristle brush under a scrubber.  No pads are needed.

Based on the limitations of currently available mobile curing equipment Pro Guard recommends limiting the application of UV Floor Coatings to clear coatings.  For colors Pro Guard’s F6800 Series Water Based two-part Epoxies are a less problematic alternative to pigmented UV Coatings at this time.  The Water Based Epoxies have a long Pot Life but cure in approximately 5 hours when applied.  This still permits application of a clear UV top coat and have a floor back in service in 8 hours.

The Classic and Ultra UV Finishes are 100% Solids coatings and will produce a uniform glossy or satin 3 mil wear coat when spread at 460 sq. ft. per gallon.  Application method and control of the spread rate are the two most important considerations with these coatings.  A maximum wet film thickness of 3 mils will avoid any wrinkling of the film during cure. This requires spreading the coatings at a rate of 460 sq. ft. per gallon on concrete and wood floors.  The best way to accomplish this is to mark off an area 46 x 10 ft. and pour 1 gallon of coating in two equal beads one at the edge and 1 five feet away.  Since these coatings do not air dry there will be plenty of time to distribute the liquid over the measured area.

Application Method

The Classic and Ultra UV finishes are formulated for optimum performance and Recoatibility.  This then made it imperative to develop a simple yet reliable procedure for application.

The use of rollers should be avoided with these coatings because they will introduce small air bubbles that are difficult to eliminate.  Using a combination of a sponge rubber squeegee for distribution followed by a T-Bar or T-Bar only has proven to be the most reliable application method.  Pro Guard recommends using our special T-Bar Cover, MTBC, in order to achieve the best film appearance.  Allow 20-30 minutes for the coating to level before curing.

Curing

Clean the wheels on the UV Floor Machine before commencing curing. Have an assistant handle the power cord so it does not contact wet coating. Move at a steady pace in straight lines making sure to maintain some overlap on the previous pass.

A color indicator will turn from blue to clear when the coating is exposed to the UV light from the UV Floor machine. This will help the operator. Keep the floor machine on the clear/cured portions of the floor.

It is important to maintain a steady forward speed with the Floor Machine in order to achieve a uniform cure of the coating. It is not possible to overcure a UV Coating bit it is possible to undercure. The color change from blue to clear indicates that the cure has taken place but not that the cure is complete. The floor may be returned to service immediately after curing has been accomplished.

Two Aliphatic Polyurethane formulations utilizing both a UV Cure and an Air Dry Cure

These coatings utilize the latest in materials and technology for producing Aliphatic Polyurethane dispersions. The Smart Finish Hybrid version is an easy to use product that forms a film when water evaporates and then undergoes a cross link cure without requiring a UV cure. The Flash Finish UV version also forms a film as water evaporates but then must be UV cured with a mobile UV curing machine in order to create internal permanent bonds that develop its best resistance properties.

The Smart Finish Hybrid and Flash Finish UV products do not need to be stripped or polished. Because of this they are less labor intensive to maintain and therefore are a cost effective alternative. Since no buffing is required, maintenance consists of washing only. The re-coat interval is also much longer and no environmentally damaging residuals are created. Smart Finish Hybrid and Flash Finish UV can be recoated or completely removed using an in between coat pad or sanding screen on a buffer or scrubber.

Cure Rates for UV Cured Coatings using Pro Guard’s UV Mobile Cure® Machine

(with a 15” wide cure path)

Assumptions

There will be a 2” cure path overlap leaving a 13” net width of cure. That turns, back ups, and other nonproductive motions will represent 20% of operator time leaving an 80% effective cure rate.

Therefore:

Sq. ft. of area cured per hour = ft/min × 139 × .80

Sq. ft. of area cured per hour = speed × 111
