Case Study – Two Domes for Fertilizer Company, Missouri

Case Study Provided by DRS - Dome & Roofing Solutions. Scope: These two domes are 90x45, totaling over 25,000 combined surface feet. Due to the corrosive nature of fertilizer, they were in rough shape. About 8 years ago, the company had hired a local coating company to provide repairs; these failed as the coating was the wrong product (elastomeric) and the company lacked the knowledge to know how to fix. Case Study – Dome for a Cement Company, Boston

Case Study Provided by DRS - Dome & Roofing Solutions.   Scope: This is a tall dome at 85 feet, not including the additional head house. We repaired several areas of the damaged fabric and recoated the entire dome and head house in a custom color. We also coated an additional 12,869 of head house atop a 135 ft silo complex, as well as some structural steel because this rubber provides an excellent anti-rust feature. The customer is a cement company and due to problems with the dome, they had 2,000+ tons of cement powder harden on the inside. This is why scheduling preventative maintenance is so crucial for dome owners!   [gallery link="file" ids="3306,3305,3304" orderby="rand"]

Pro Guard 9100 Super Armor | A Preservation Coating

The Pro Guard Coatings Super Armor is specifically formulated to be waterproof, reduce dirt accumulation and mildew growth, and facilitate the removal of graffiti on stone and stucco buildings without damaging the coating. How it works: When applied to the exterior of a newly cleaned and painted structure Super Armor forms a nearly invisible membrane envelope. This invisible envelope does not change the appearance of color or texture of the surface. Graffiti can easily be removed by applying a paint stripper followed by a high pressure rinse. ProGuard Coatings packages the catalyst for Super Armor separately. This method of packaging greatly improves the storage stability. When the catalyst is added, however, the mixed product must be applied in approximately one hour to prevent skinning or thickening in the container. The applied material will cure in 1 to 3 hours. Although SUPER ARMOR utilizes recently developed chemistry, it is based on a very durable Urethane Polymer which makes it reasonable to project a 15 year service life for the coating. Features:
  • Cures in 1-3 Hrs. by absorbing moisture from the air
  • Waterproofs porous surfaces
  • Prevents dirt pickup
  • Permits graffiti removal
  • Can be applied to damp surfaces
  • Cures at low temps 33 degrees fahrenheit (1 degree celsius)
  • Produces a clear invisible film

How Moisture Curing Works

Our Moisture Cure Liquid Rubber is a Silylated Hybrid Polymer based on a Urethane/Polyether chemistry. Our Moisture Curing mechanism is unique in the way it overcomes restrictions for minimum temperatures and damp or wet substrates. Find out how our 9101 Moisture Cure Liquid Rubber works to provide you with the best coating possible. The base polymer is chemically modified to react with moisture when the supplied catalyst is added. This produces two reactive byproducts which then combine to form a stable bond. This process continues automatically until all reactive sites are combined. The process only depends on the availability of moisture in the form of airborne water vapor or liquid water. This is why Moisture Curable coatings can be applied to damp surfaces and even cure underwater. Low ambient temperatures will slow the cure process, but do not arrest it. Even if the coating is applied in above freezing conditions and temperature drops below that a short time later, the coating will still eventually cure without compromising its physical properties. As long as moisture is available in the presence of the catalyst, the final cured properties will be consistently the same. 9101 Moisture Cure Liquid Rubber and 9100 Super Armor Clear are both moisture curable coatings that can be applied year round. These coatings are equipped to cure at temperatures as low as a few degrees above freezing and can be applied to damp surfaces. The versatility and adaptability of these products makes your coating a breeze! For more information on our Moisture Cure Liquid Rubber product, visit our product description.

At ICC, the Few Decide for the Many

On October 25, the International Code Council (lCC) 2018 final action hearings concluded, leaving only the online voting portion to be completed sometime in mid-November to finalize the code. It seems that the approval for the new ASCE 7-16 standard, for at least the International Building Code (lBC) and International Energy Building Code (IEBC) 2018, is a forgone conclusion. We'll have to wait and see. Read more here.

Why Use Liquid Rubber On Your Roof?

Looking to extend the longevity of your roof? Avoid common roof issues by applying a Liquid Rubber EPDM® coating. No matter the age of your roof, a Liquid Rubber coating is the best way to preserve and protect your roof from some of these common issues. Sun and Water Years of the sun’s powerful UV rays beating down on your roof can cause damage. The rays can cause the roofing membrane to crack. These cracks allow for water to penetrate your roof and leak into your building. By coating your roof with a Liquid Rubber EPDM®, you can avoid breakage and water damage inside your building. Varying Temperature Seasonal weather changes cause expansion and contraction in many things, including your roof. In the warm weather, your roof expands, and in the cold weather, it contracts. This fluctuation causes your roof to crack and break. A roof coating protects your roof by making these fluctuations less severe. Physical Damage Various other factors have the potential to damage and decrease the longevity of your roof. Falling debris, pollutants, winds and other physical factors put your roof at risk of damage. Applying a Liquid Rubber EPDM® helps combat these commonly unforeseeable factors. Avoid the high cost of replacing your roof by simply applying a Liquid Rubber EPDM®. Pro Guard Coatings’ Liquid Rubber EPDM® combats sun, water, temperature, and physical damage. The Pro Guard Coatings trademark is a signature for products immediately recognized for their quality, our industry leadership and a serious commitment to technical and customer service. 5 Simple Steps to Winterize Your Home

Before the temperatures drop below freezing, make sure your home is winterized with some of these steps:
  1. Take care of your plumbing. Avoid water damage and mold by inspecting your pipes to ensure that they are not vulnerable to cycles of freezing and thawing that can cause a pipe to burst. Winterize outdoor plumbing by shutting off and draining the water supply to outdoor faucets, sprinklers, etc. Also consider covering your outdoor condensing unit.
  2. Change the direction of your ceiling fans. By turning your ceiling fans to rotate clockwise, the warm air in your home will be circulated upwards from the ground. This simple task can cut your heating costs by 10% during the wintertime.
  3. Store your outdoor equipment. The cold weather can cause a great deal of damage to your outdoor furniture and equipment. Store outdoor items indoors or use covers to protect them from cold temperatures, ice, and snow.
  4. Control your thermostat. Another way to save money while heating your home is programming your thermostat. You can save from 5-15% a year on your heating bill by turning your thermostat down by a couple degrees. Choose a time where your house is the warmest, or no one is in the home.
  5. Use insulation to block the cold. Don’t lose heat because your home isn’t properly insulated. Weatherstripping your windows and doors can prevent heat from escaping your home, as well as cold air entering it.
Make sure your home is ready for Winter. Contact Pro Guard Coatings for the best expertise on how to get your roof ready for the winter elements. For more information on Pro Guard Coatings and winterizing your home, please visit proguardcoatings.com.

Contractor Tips for Using the Pro Guard Coatings Product: Liquid Rubber EPDM

No coating product is the same. Factors like consistency, application, and maintenance vary between the most reliable products on the market. When coating a roof, floor, or any other surface contractors need to be aware of how each product is applied successfully. Liquid Rubber has been on the market 21 years and during that time many different applications have been tried and tested. Pro Guard Coatings’ Liquid Rubber® is a two component solvent solution version of the single ply EPDM membrane rubber. Its physical properties and method of cure make it unique among liquid applied coatings. The unique combination of properties of Liquid Rubber® are factors that contractors need to consider when applying the product to surfaces. The Liquid Rubber® properties are:
  • Can apply an up to 35 mil dry film in one coat.
  • Penetrates into cracks and crevices.
  • Can go directly over a lightly rusted surface without a primer.
  • Cure is not affected by relative humidity.
  • Freezing does not damage uncured coating.
  • Can withstand ponding water or immersion indefinitely.
  • Tolerates a wide temperature range from -60°F to 300°F.
Liquid Rubber® has application and spray characteristics that are considerably different from other types of liquid coatings.  Although Liquid Rubber® has a heavy consistency, it will self level and penetrate small crevices and pores.  It is also harder to brush and more difficult to atomize for spray.  The two efficient methods of application are spreading, and thinning then spraying.   The Pro Guard Coatings trademark is a signature for products immediately recognized for their quality, our industry leadership and a serious commitment to technical and customer service. 5 Fall Home Maintenance Tips

The weather is changing and you want to make sure your home is ready for the cooler months ahead. While everyone knows to prepare their homes for the winter, most not know the maintenance you can do during the Fall months to make sure your home is safe and secure. Check out some of our Fall Home Maintenance Tips:
  1. Clean Your Gutters Keep the water flowing. Your home’s gutters are responsible for removing thousands of gallons of water from the exterior of your home, every year. Don’t let the changing season leave your gutters full of dead leaves, preventing water to flow smoothly. Clogged gutters can lead to damage to exterior surfaces, water in your basement, rust and corrosion. Avoid the cost of damages by having your gutters cleaned and covered before the leaves begin to fall.
  2. Inspect Your Roof Examine your roof for wear and tear, or hire a professional to do it for you. During the year your shingles are prone to curl, buckle or crack and require replacement. Another aspect of roof inspection is sealing gaps, that snow and ice can leak through.
  3. Have Your Wood-burning Fireplace Inspected There is nothing like sitting by a crackling fire on a crisp fall evening. Before you build your fire, have your wood-burning fireplace cleaned and repaired to prevent chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.
  4. Trim Dead Branches Check trees surrounding your house for dead branches. Prevent them from coming down and causing damage in a winter storm.
  5. Fertilize Lawn The grass might stop growing, but in fact grass roots continue to grow through the fall. The cool weather makes for a great time to aerate your lawn; it will allow nutrients and moisture to get into the roots, to help them grow. Spread fertilizer and grass seed following aeration.
Make sure your home is ready for the cooler months. Contact Pro Guard Coatings for the best expertise on how to get your roof ready for the Fall. For more information on Pro Guard Coatings and Fall home maintenance, please visit proguardcoatings.com.

Although Proflex Primer® has good water, solvent and chemical resistance it is primarily designed to be an intermediate bond coat so that high performance and special purpose coatings can be applied to existing substrates.

Surface Prep

Substrate should be dry, free of debris, dirt, moss, algae, mildew and oil. Loose or peeling paint must be removed. Make repairs and tighten or replace fasteners prior to application of primer. High pressure washing is an effective cleaning method.

Method of Application

A combination of rubber squeegee, roller and brush are most practical on flat surfaces. A pressure pot spray system may be used if pot life limitations can be adhered to.

Recommended Spreading Rate

When spread at 250 sq. ft. per gallon a 5.5 mil dry film will result on a smooth surface. Although this is sufficient for bonding to the substrate it may be difficult to achieve in practice. A squeegee and roller application will usually result in covering 150-175 sq. ft. per gallon which results in an average dry film thickness of 8-9 mils. Rough or porous surfaces will require a lower coverage per gallon.

The above data is gathered in a controlled Laboratory environment.  Your conditions will vary.  Pot Life, Gel Time, Dry Time and Cure Time will all be affected by ambient as well as surface temperatures.  Higher temperatures shorten the time you have to work with the product.  Always mix thoroughly and immediately pour out of the container onto the surface to be coated.  Only mix the amount you can easily spread within 30 minutes.  If more specific information is needed please call Pro Guard Coatings at 800-735-4399

U.S. Coast Guard and Liquid Roof®

The U.S. Coast Guard recently completed a coating of their roof with Liquid Rubber® in Ocean City, MD. The General Contractor was Edgewater Construction of Chesapeake, VA. Bill Washborn was the Project Manager. He used Certified Applicator, Dome and Roofing Solutions owned by Lars Benson. The project called for a 17,000 sq. ft. standing seam metal roof coating. The used Liquid Rubber® that was tinted to "Coast Guard Blue"! The Liquid Rubber® was applied to the roof using a truck mount sprayer. Eric at Better Roofing came to assist and advise. DSC_0580Existing epoxy and urethane coatings cannot be readily recoated without encountering intercoat adhesion issues. Pro Guard Coatings' Proflex Primer F1501 allows users to recoat varying surfaces with the same or different coating type. When applied to an EPDM rubber membrane, Proflex Primer F1501 will prevent absorption of oils, fats and solvents while providing excellent weathering, chemical and ponding resistance. Proflex Primer F1501 reconstitutes surface wear and provides an excellent binding to rubber. Please visit us online or contact us for more information.

It’s All About The Science: Recoating Your RV

DSC_6878 (1)Choosing the right product for your application requires some knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of each type of product available on the market today. Pro Guard Coatings Liquid Roof® is an aftermarket product designed to extend life, seal leaks and provide a heat reflective or aesthetic function over existing roof surfaces. The most widely used liquid coatings by the RV industry are acrylic elastomeric products. The weakness of these products, however, comes from the fact that they are water-based emulsions. These water-based solutions are vulnerable to sudden showers or freezing temperatures soon after application. They have inherently poor resistance to standing/ponding water. Liquid Roof is the only EPDM product currently available on the market. Liquid Roof is UV and ozone resistant, excellent against standing water and waterproofs immediately upon application. Liquid Roof is the best and most cost effect product on the market today. Leverage Liquid Roof for all your roofing needs. Please contact us for more information.
